Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD): The Underdiagnosed Vascular Disease

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a condition where the artery walls weaken, resulting in areas of narrowing (stenosis) and widening (aneurysms) giving the look of a string of beads.  This results in an increased risk of the artery tearing (dissection). FMD can affect arteries throughout the body but most commonly involves those supplying the kidneys (renal arteries) and brain (carotid arteries).  While there's no cure, early diagnosis and treatment are key.
